Welcome F. Paul Wilson to Crossroad Press

Welcome F. Paul Wilson to Crossroad Press

I’m going to go on at length, so, before I do, I’d like to announce that Crossroad Press will be publishing the trade hardcover, trade paperback, eBook and audiobook editions of F. Paul Wilson’s The Last Christmas – a Repairman Jack novel. The book will appear in Hardcover in mid November, shortly followed by the trade paperback. The eBook and Audiobook editions will (if the Gods of audio agree with us) will be available on the official release date, December 19th, the day that the events of the novel take place. I also want to mention that the book can be ordered now in a gorgeous signed, limited edition from Gautnlet Press – I bought a copy almost as soon as it was up for order. That link is HERE. There are signed and lettered editions, and Barry Hoffman did a wonderful job on the design.

The cover design for our book is traditional Jack, courtesy of the team of David Dodd, and Aaron Rosenberg (who also handled the print interior). We will put the eBook and audiobook up for pre-order as soon as we can to match up with the release date.

THE NOVEL: Jack is back.

Jack is back.

It’s late December between Ground Zero and Fatal Error, a winter of discontent for Jack who’s perhaps spending too much time hanging at Julio’s. An old contact, Edward Burkes, convinces him to take on a missing-person fix. As usual, nothing is as it seems and the missing person isn’t exactly a person. In fact, it’s like nothing anyone has ever seen.

And in the middle of all this, the mysterious Madame de Medici hires him to safeguard a valuable object. Simple, right?

Not even close.

Yep, Jack is back and, as usual, weird trouble is on his heels.

Now… I promised I was going to go on a bit. A long, long time ago, at a wonderful convention called NECON, I met F. Paul Wilson, Charlie Grant, Rick Hautala, put faces to the names Mark Rainey and Elizabeth Massie, Tom Monteleone, Yvonne Navarro, and Jeff Osier. So many more. I will never forget that there was a conversation between Paul, Charlie, and Rick Hautala going on about what was the best horror story ever… and they accepted me into it as if I was one of them. For that weekend – I was.  Now, so many years, and so many books beyond that – for both of us – I get to publish one of Paul’s books – in a series that I love – with magic, and demons, a hero who would die for those he loves.  So much imagination and depth – an entire world of it.  I consider this an honor. I’m a very picky reader. I tend to read all of a person’s body of work if I fall in love with a single title because it’s very rare that I find a voice that I love. I read many of the Repairman Jack novels years back – but have started over at the beginning, listening to the audio. Our audiobook will be performed by Jeffrey Kafer, who I know will be perfect.   More news will follow, as we get it – reviews, possibly a contest. I sincerely hope to make this a bestseller for Paul, and for Jack. Jack works hard for his money…

January Update from Crossroad Press New Authors & Books!

January Update from Crossroad Press New Authors & Books!

To say that January has been a busy month would be among the more serious understatements of the new year. Crossroad Press is welcoming a wealth of new authors, as well as launching NECON PRESENTS – a Category of the store that will be much more than just that – drawing together the works of authors who have attended one of the most iconic conventions of all time – Camp Necon… but rather than go on about all the work we’ve been doing, let’s get straight to the updates, because there are a pile of them.

We have new eBooks from a number of authors, and since we added multiple titles for each of them, I’m going to provide links to their author page in our online store, rather than to every individual book.  From those pages you can purchase their eBooks from Amazon, Apple, Kobo, Smashwords and Barnes & Noble (depending on availability).  Some are still in the process of being loaded to a few of the sites, and others are in Kindle Unlimited and only available at Amazon. All available options can be found by clicking the links below:

Tim Waggoner  / Tim Curran  Aaron Gudmunson   /  Sara St. John Raymond Van Over  /  Eric Shapiro  /  Duncan McGeary  /  Stephen Weiner  /  Seth Sorkowsky  /  Lisa Von Biela  /  Ray Garton  /  David Hambling  /  P. D. Cacek  /  William Meikle  /  Thomas Tessier  Elizabeth Massie Dan Foley  /  Trish & Rob MacGregor

We have three new print editions for January (so far)

Temporary Hauntings – by Craig Shaw Gardner – Book II in the Tempoarary Magic series (Book III coming soon in print and available now in eBook formats)

And finally – new audio.  Three titles have gone live so far in January : Remember – Audio prices on our site are full retail – when you order through Audible.com – if you are a member, they are one credit. If it is your first audiobook with Audible, it’s free. If you own, or buy the eBook you will get a discount on most titles through their “Whispersync for Voice” feature.

Barracuda Final Bearing – A Submarine Thriller by Michael DiMercurio – Narrated by Joseph Courtemanche.

A Quail in the Family – by William Plummer – narrated by Pete Ferrand – a family’s adventures with an adopted quail…

Wynfield’s Kingdom – by M. J. Neary – Narrated by Tony Cleary – a Tale of the London Slums…

Keep checking back at the store for new titles – search through the author’s pages, and the many categories… spread the word, and tell your friends to sign up for our Newsletter – it’s on the right hand side of every product page and at the top of all the website pages… Until next time… GOOD READING!

The Fabulous Book Covers of Our Own David Dodd

The Fabulous Book Covers of Our Own David Dodd

Behind the scenes at Crossroad Press, an incredible amount of work takes place. There is scanning, proofing, formatting, soliciting narrators and authors, promotions, the store, uploading things to the various sites… and there are book covers. When I started Crossroad Press, I had to depend on a couple of people to help out by providing covers. They were not fast, and in the end the most prolific of them turned out to be a crook.  Along the way, though, something very cool happened.  David Dodd, who signed on years ago as my business partner, got hold of Photoshop and started figuring it out.  Over the span of years he and I have worked together, he has now done more than 1300 book covers.  Yes… 1300… that’s an incredible output, and he has also become very, very good at it. I wanted to take a moment and thank him for the work, and share some of those covers with all of you – his five favorites, my own five favorites, the two we agreed on … and as an added bonus, we both picked a “branded series” that we like the best as a group…First up, the two covers we both chose from all of those available:

We both chose the cover for John McIlveen’s HANNAHWHERE immediately. This is a Crossroad Press original novel and has done very well. You can reach the product page for this novel by clicking HERE or on the book cover. John now runs his own press, Haverhill House, where he is putting out some very attractive and interesting books.  If you like supernatural suspense, Hannawhwere is a book you should check out.  We have it in eBook formats, Hardcover, trade paperback and audio.

I added the Dark Fortune cover to our shared favorites after I saw it on Dave’s list. I see all of our covers, of course, but I’ve been head-down building the store lately, and this is a newer one, so I had not seen it enough times to get the full effect. The novel is classic supernatural horror, with Tarot cards, a mysterious old curio shop, a congregation full of people in “immortal” danger. The stuff that the genre was built on… You can reach the product page by clicking HERE, or on the cover … while you are there (either of these two of course) check out the links to other books by these authors, or in the same categories by following the links provided.

And now on to the two top five lists:

These are Dave’s top five, more or less.  Remember that the two we both liked were among his top choices.  There is one other choice not included here that is missing because it has not yet been posted in the store, and I wanted to be able to link to all of the products… The thing that works about these covers, for me, is that you can read the text at a thumbnail size… the images are sharp and clear – the colors complement one another well, and the placement of the text is proportionate to the background, symmetrical and balanced.  I could imagine walking into Barnes & Noble and seeing these sitting right in with the best-sellers, and that (of course) is the goal, though Barnes & Noble won’t order from us… a story for another day. You can find the product page for each by clicking on the cover image.

My own five (not counting the two ties) are a different group… which is also part of the magic of a thing like cover art. No one is attracted to the same types of things.  Two people can love and hate the same cover (and often do). The important thing is that it draws the attention of people browsing for a book – and that it presents the portion of the marketing information that is necessary. It does not have to include something that is a scene from the book, or a character… your readers in most cases do not have the information you do and would not catch the references anyway. It’s better to be striking.  Here are my choices:

Each of these caught my eye at one point, or another, and then I came back to them. I find them compelling and love the composition. Stacked Deck is a perfect image for a hard-boiled mystery collection – The Plot looks like an off-the-newsstand best-seller ought to – the skyline, the intrigue… Irving Wallace would have been proud.  Slightly Off Center – the image and the way it’s sort of fish-eyed give exactly the off-kilter feel Neal Barret Jr. evokes with his fiction. The Jazz is cyberpunk-ish and cool with just the right colors… and The Enormous Hourglass (now in production as an audiobook) just grabs me… no idea what the book is about from the image but I want to KNOW… and that is what matters.  There were a few that almost made the list… I’m going to drop those below, and then the first in each of the two series brandings we chose – Dave chose “The Instruments of Death” series by Paul Dale Anderson – which is a great police proceural, forensic thriller series – and I chose the Whit Pynchon Mysteries by the late Dave Peneau. Links (of course) to the covers.

Honorable mentions and series branding:

We are hoping that all of you reading this will comment on the covers, and go to the ONLINE STORE to check out the rest of the more than 1300 covers Dave has done. Tell us the ones that you like.  2018 is going to be a big year for us, and there are many more to come. And while you are on any product page or anywhere in the store, use the handy link on the right to sign up for our newsletter!

Top 25 eBook Titles from Crossroad Press in 2017

Top 25 eBook Titles from Crossroad Press in 2017

Since we have so many more eBooks than audio or print, I decided to go with our top 25 titles of 2017. You’ll find a mixture of genres and authors here, but notably non-fiction is still holding the top spots – notably true crime titles and biographies do well also. Clive Barker (no surprise) has several slots, but congratulations to Deborah Morgan, Bill Crider, and Brian Pinkerton for breaking onto this list. Survivor’s Game – a book I wrote with Holocaust Survivor David Karmi, is also on the list, as is my collaboration with Stacy Childs – the medical sports thriller Block 10 and my own novel Nevermore – all of which makes me happy. Dominant this year were the submarine thrillers of Michael DiMercurio…it was a very good year, and 2018 looks to be even better. Thanks to all of you who buy and read… below are a couple of links… one to our current best selling titles at Amazon – and one to our titles at Amazon that are enrolled in the Kindle Unlimited program – there are a LOT Of them, and if you are a KU subscriber I hope you’ll consider checking some of them out… over 400 available titles in that program. If you are NOT part of that program, but read a lot, you might want to give it a look…

Top 25 Bestselling Audiobooks from Crossroad Press in 2017

It should come as no surprise that Clive Barker’s audiobooks continue to dominate our sales, but the good news for us, our authors, and our narrators is that a: A lot of people got to help with the narration of those books and b: a lot of our other books have started to give them competition. I would also like to congratulate the narrators with the most success – Simon Vance, Kevin Pierce, Chet Williamson and Jeffrey Kafer.  Below is a list of the top 25 bestselling audiobooks from Crossroad Press.
