New Releases, Pre-Orders, and Our Exit from Beehiiv

Welcome tot he Crossroad Press Newsletter. You’ll notice we have moved off of the Beehiiv platform. There are several reasons, but the biggest is that it offered nothing we don’t have doing the newsletter ourselves, was expensive, and their advertising options were more aligned with entreneurship sprinkled with a heavy dose of AI, which we want nothing to do with. I’m going to start with some thoughts on the new Audible membership option, Audible Standard, and how I believe it helps presses like ours, independent authors and publishers with large backlists in possibly significant ways.

Under the new membership plan, Audible Standard, membes can choose one audiobook to add to their libarary that is theirs as long as they have the account, like the higher paid accounts that have always existed. The difference is that, along with that one book, they have access to read as many of the enrolled titles as they want. We have enrolled all but a very small number of our books and the results have been interesting. To get a book on Audible before this you had to be willing to risk either the cost of the book, or one of their memberhips credits. That means an independent author, or a backlist titles from an established author, are fighting Dungeon Crawler Carl and every big release from popular authors. It’s a losing battle.

Since the Standard memberhsip was activated, we have noticed that a lot of older series books are getting a shot. People are listening to titles they might not have tried otherwise, and for those addicted to audiobooks, this is a blessing. I don’t know how invested other publishers are in this but we have just over 1,000 titles in the program that you can listen to with the standard membership, while still having a book a month to choose with an Audible credit. This membership is only $8.99 a month, which means even that one title is a bargain. I am pointing this out, of course, because I hope that, if you take advantage of that program, which is very similar to the Kindle Unlimited program, I hope you’ll consider checking out the titles, series, omnibus editions and authors we have published there. Change isn’t always good, but I think for a lot fo authors, this one is.
