The Fabulous Book Covers of Our Own David Dodd

The Fabulous Book Covers of Our Own David Dodd

Behind the scenes at Crossroad Press, an incredible amount of work takes place. There is scanning, proofing, formatting, soliciting narrators and authors, promotions, the store, uploading things to the various sites… and there are book covers. When I started Crossroad Press, I had to depend on a couple of people to help out by providing covers. They were not fast, and in the end the most prolific of them turned out to be a crook.  Along the way, though, something very cool happened.  David Dodd, who signed on years ago as my business partner, got hold of Photoshop and started figuring it out.  Over the span of years he and I have worked together, he has now done more than 1300 book covers.  Yes… 1300… that’s an incredible output, and he has also become very, very good at it. I wanted to take a moment and thank him for the work, and share some of those covers with all of you – his five favorites, my own five favorites, the two we agreed on … and as an added bonus, we both picked a “branded series” that we like the best as a group…First up, the two covers we both chose from all of those available:

We both chose the cover for John McIlveen’s HANNAHWHERE immediately. This is a Crossroad Press original novel and has done very well. You can reach the product page for this novel by clicking HERE or on the book cover. John now runs his own press, Haverhill House, where he is putting out some very attractive and interesting books.  If you like supernatural suspense, Hannawhwere is a book you should check out.  We have it in eBook formats, Hardcover, trade paperback and audio.

I added the Dark Fortune cover to our shared favorites after I saw it on Dave’s list. I see all of our covers, of course, but I’ve been head-down building the store lately, and this is a newer one, so I had not seen it enough times to get the full effect. The novel is classic supernatural horror, with Tarot cards, a mysterious old curio shop, a congregation full of people in “immortal” danger. The stuff that the genre was built on… You can reach the product page by clicking HERE, or on the cover … while you are there (either of these two of course) check out the links to other books by these authors, or in the same categories by following the links provided.

And now on to the two top five lists:

These are Dave’s top five, more or less.  Remember that the two we both liked were among his top choices.  There is one other choice not included here that is missing because it has not yet been posted in the store, and I wanted to be able to link to all of the products… The thing that works about these covers, for me, is that you can read the text at a thumbnail size… the images are sharp and clear – the colors complement one another well, and the placement of the text is proportionate to the background, symmetrical and balanced.  I could imagine walking into Barnes & Noble and seeing these sitting right in with the best-sellers, and that (of course) is the goal, though Barnes & Noble won’t order from us… a story for another day. You can find the product page for each by clicking on the cover image.

My own five (not counting the two ties) are a different group… which is also part of the magic of a thing like cover art. No one is attracted to the same types of things.  Two people can love and hate the same cover (and often do). The important thing is that it draws the attention of people browsing for a book – and that it presents the portion of the marketing information that is necessary. It does not have to include something that is a scene from the book, or a character… your readers in most cases do not have the information you do and would not catch the references anyway. It’s better to be striking.  Here are my choices:

Each of these caught my eye at one point, or another, and then I came back to them. I find them compelling and love the composition. Stacked Deck is a perfect image for a hard-boiled mystery collection – The Plot looks like an off-the-newsstand best-seller ought to – the skyline, the intrigue… Irving Wallace would have been proud.  Slightly Off Center – the image and the way it’s sort of fish-eyed give exactly the off-kilter feel Neal Barret Jr. evokes with his fiction. The Jazz is cyberpunk-ish and cool with just the right colors… and The Enormous Hourglass (now in production as an audiobook) just grabs me… no idea what the book is about from the image but I want to KNOW… and that is what matters.  There were a few that almost made the list… I’m going to drop those below, and then the first in each of the two series brandings we chose – Dave chose “The Instruments of Death” series by Paul Dale Anderson – which is a great police proceural, forensic thriller series – and I chose the Whit Pynchon Mysteries by the late Dave Peneau. Links (of course) to the covers.

Honorable mentions and series branding:

Top 25 eBook Titles from Crossroad Press in 2017

Top 25 eBook Titles from Crossroad Press in 2017

Since we have so many more eBooks than audio or print, I decided to go with our top 25 titles of 2017. You’ll find a mixture of genres and authors here, but notably non-fiction is still holding the top spots – notably true crime titles and biographies do well also. Clive Barker (no surprise) has several slots, but congratulations to Deborah Morgan, Bill Crider, and Brian Pinkerton for breaking onto this list. Survivor’s Game – a book I wrote with Holocaust Survivor David Karmi, is also on the list, as is my collaboration with Stacy Childs – the medical sports thriller Block 10 and my own novel Nevermore – all of which makes me happy. Dominant this year were the submarine thrillers of Michael DiMercurio…it was a very good year, and 2018 looks to be even better. Thanks to all of you who buy and read… below are a couple of links… one to our current best selling titles at Amazon – and one to our titles at Amazon that are enrolled in the Kindle Unlimited program – there are a LOT Of them, and if you are a KU subscriber I hope you’ll consider checking some of them out… over 400 available titles in that program. If you are NOT part of that program, but read a lot, you might want to give it a look…

The New Store Continues to Grow 450 Plus Titles

The New Store Continues to Grow 450 Plus Titles

THE NEW STORE IS GROWING

As I load all of the books we’ve published one by one, I’m remembering the circumstances behind each – remembering why I love the people, and the books. For a very long time we’ve sort of rolled along, and I now feel as if I’ve done a disservice by not putting a store like this together sooner – I want to share some of the books, and the stories.  I’ll be doing a lot of this in my own blog, because these posts – and this newsletter – are meant for sharing and promotion. I hope you will all do that – I hope if you are receiving this, you want to – please believe that we will never spam anyone, we just want you to know about all the words, and stories, audiobooks and more… if you know others  who would be interested, please let them know.

Notable additions to the site this week include the works of New York Times Bestselling Author William Bayer – his Janek novels were made into TV movies (and the first of them, SWITCH, I caught being referenced on an episode of Castle a couple of years ago).  His Kay Farrow novels, and the foreign detective series are amazing books, and his novel Hiding in the Weave a mystery set in a private school, along with City of Knives – the latest in his series of novels about foreign detectives – are Crossroad Press originals – published by us first… and we need to get that word out.  He’s an amazing author.

Also original to us and available among all of his other works are the three books of Craig Shaw Gardner’s TEMPORARY MAGIC series … he’s funny, he’s clever, and these books will bring a serious smile. They are original to Crossroad Press…

That’s enough for one short note, but I want to leave you with some links.  We have listed a lot of AUDIOBOOKS in the store …. we have over a hundred of the 400 titles we have in Kindle Unlimited live here… our print books are 20% off if bought through our site (if you see one not marked for sale let me know… I figured out how to do it after some of the print books were already on the site).

And don’t forget that all of the Stargate eBooks are available for direct order…

Ronald Kelly – First Author completely live in the New Store

Ronald Kelly – First Author completely live in the New Store

Rebuilding our entire store is an astronomically large project.  We have just about 150 products added back in, and now we are starting to add them in chunks. We have just added all of the products for author Ronald Kelly – who has a number of horror novels, collections, and a young adult novel with us. I’m writing this post, and will continue to write them as time permits, to show the look and feel of what we are doing. Any product that has a print edition you will be able to purchase here at our store.  Any book with eBook editions, with the exception of the Stargate novels which you can buy directly from our store, will have links to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple iTunes, Kobo and Smashwords (or as many of those as the book is available at) as well as an Audible.com link for audioooks.  Categories now include Kindle Unlimited so that if a customer is signed up for Amazon’s  Kindle Unlimited program, they can find which books of ours are enrolled in that program.  Right now there are over 400 of our 1600 or so titles in Kindle Unlimited… including our popular O.C.L.T. series and Paul Dale Anderson’s Instruments of Death forensic crime series.

All of the Stargate novels are live, all of Ronald Kelly, and a good sampling of other titles can now be purchased through our site, using Paypal or Stripe for Credit Card purchases.  Check it out!  Let us know what you think.

And Check out Ronald Kelly’s Author Category to see what is in store…multiply that times about 180 and we’re there!

New Website – New Store – Growing up…

New Website – New Store – Growing up…

We have been in need of this facelift for a very long time… Crossroad Press has grown well beyond the tiny dream I once had for it, and become a force in digital publishing, digital audio, as well as producing a growing print catalog. I am going to have to ask readers, customers, and authors to be patient with me. There are around 1600 titles in our catalog… nearly 180 authors. Each product and author has an entry in the store.  I started by making all of the Stargate eBooks available, because, frankly those are the only eBooks anyone regularly buys here at our site, and we have an obligation to the wonderful folks at Fandemonium for trusting us with digital distribution for their books.

Next up will be the books that are either original to Crossroad Press – or that we have done print editions of. I want a good place for people to find and buy our books. I will be adding features like the chance to have any of them autographed by the author … this will require a fee just to ship the book to the author and on to customers, but should add a personal touch. There will be sales and coupons galore.  Each product in the store will have links to audible.com for audiobooks, and to all of the retailers that we use for eBook distribution, as well as direct buy links for print editions.  Each author will have their own drop page, and you can see the bare-bones start of that by clicking this image:

Something very strange is going on in Bowling Green, Kentucky. A masked terrorist attacks a local politician and a news reporter at a minor league baseball game. A Gay Pride parade is bombed. A veterans’ home is invaded and falls under new ownership, and every resident that is not Caucasian has suddenly…disappeared.

Krump Enterprises, run by Ronald Krump and his assistant, Race Scanlon, have begun a systematic takeover of the city, spreading rumors about immigrant violence, tearing down horse farms to build a country club, blackmailing the mayor, and much, much worse.

It’s up to Police Chief Hannity, Doctor Abner Brody, a reporter named Lauren Kelly, a stoner named Walt, and Frederick Douglass, time traveler, to track down the truth, and stop Krump before the city falls under his sway, and even darker days prevail.

Remember Bowling Green is a cautionary tale, first in the Crossroad Press series of Alternative History novels. Though we are not directly affiliated with the ACLU, 80% (our normal author share) of proceeds from this book will go to the ACLU to help fight for our rights and freedoms.

Let no one forget…Bowling Green.

An unlikely alliance blossoms and Morgan becomes known as ‘a friend of Mr. Nijinsky’. Doors open and he grabs the opportunity to get back to racing the motorcars he loves. But as the young American is drawn in to Nijinsky’s paranoid world, he is pulled into a murder investigation and discovers a side of his city he never knew existed. Disciples of the Serpent – An O.C.L.T. Tie-in Novel by Sid Williams – In Dublin, Ireland, academics and historians are dying. An unidentified venom is to blame. Strange markings from deep in the Emerald Isle’s past suggest adherents to lost and forbidden knowledge may have reorganized.

Detective Aileen O’Donnell, teamed with Geoffrey Bullfinch and Wendell “Mack” Macklemore of O.C.L.T. are on a race through medieval ruins and holy sites. They must collect puzzle pieces, fragments from a forgotten pulp writer and bits of secret Druid history to stop the shadowy band of disciples before it awakens something long sleeping beneath one of Ireland’s most famous landmarks, something modern technology and firepower can’t defeat.

Phoenix Sub-Zero by Michael DiMercurio – The Hegira is the finest super-sub that Arab oil money can buy. But the U.S. Navy is only now learning just how good this undersea sword of Islam is. Already one American sub has been destroyed, and another crippled, as the Hegira breaks out of the Mediterranean and heads toward America to deliver its lethal payload.

Now it’s up to Captain Michael Pacino and the USS Seawolf to find the enemy sub and destroy it—in the ultimate battle between the most advanced weapons technology on the planet…and the sheer force of human courage.

Women in Horror – a Big Crossroad Press Salute!

Women in Horror – a Big Crossroad Press Salute!

Note from CEO David Niall Wilson:

I have been privileged to have worked with a great number of talented ladies throughout a long career associated with publishing, writing, and several genres of fiction. I am likely most associated with the horror community, having served as the President of the HWA and won a couple of awards.  During that time, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and be influenced by so many talented authors. I’ve never really differentiated them by gender, race or any other criteria, but looking back, I can tell you that a great deal of the influence on my career, my writing style, and my love of horror as a genre can be attributed to a string of remarkable women. A short list (not complete) would include Elizabeth Massie, Kathe Koja, Poppy Z. Brite, Shirley Jackson, Tanith Lee, Yvonne Navarro, Anne Rice, Caitlin Kiernan, Patricia Lee Macomber, Janet Berliner and Joyce Carol Oates.  (No order, just thinking).

At Crossroad Press, we have also been privileged to publish a large number of “women in horror” and I wanted a post up here to highlight that.  I’m not putting the books on sale – I think if you are honoring something, trying to turn it into a bargain is not the best way to do that. I’m simply going to mention those we are working with, at least two of whom have (sadly) left us for whatever comes next. I hope you’ll follow the links, read some of the books, and love them as I have.
