Women in Horror – a Big Crossroad Press Salute!

Women in Horror – a Big Crossroad Press Salute!

Note from CEO David Niall Wilson:

I have been privileged to have worked with a great number of talented ladies throughout a long career associated with publishing, writing, and several genres of fiction. I am likely most associated with the horror community, having served as the President of the HWA and won a couple of awards.  During that time, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and be influenced by so many talented authors. I’ve never really differentiated them by gender, race or any other criteria, but looking back, I can tell you that a great deal of the influence on my career, my writing style, and my love of horror as a genre can be attributed to a string of remarkable women. A short list (not complete) would include Elizabeth Massie, Kathe Koja, Poppy Z. Brite, Shirley Jackson, Tanith Lee, Yvonne Navarro, Anne Rice, Caitlin Kiernan, Patricia Lee Macomber, Janet Berliner and Joyce Carol Oates.  (No order, just thinking).

At Crossroad Press, we have also been privileged to publish a large number of “women in horror” and I wanted a post up here to highlight that.  I’m not putting the books on sale – I think if you are honoring something, trying to turn it into a bargain is not the best way to do that. I’m simply going to mention those we are working with, at least two of whom have (sadly) left us for whatever comes next. I hope you’ll follow the links, read some of the books, and love them as I have.

Titus Crow Series by Brian Lumley & Black Oak Series by Charles L. Grant in AUDIO!

Titus Crow Series by Brian Lumley & Black Oak Series by Charles L. Grant in AUDIO!

THE TITUS CROW SERIES – by BRIAN LUMLEY – Narrated by SIMON VANCE & COREY SNOW

In a departure from many Cthulhu Mythos stories, Lumley’s characters are not helpless victims of unimaginable forces which can drive humans mad by merely manifesting themselves. Instead, Titus Crow, his friend Henri-Laurent de Marigny, and other Lumley characters confront Cthulhu’s minions in a series of increasingly large-scale encounters, in which humans, although outmatched, try to fight back.

THE BLACK OAK SERIES – by CHARLES L. GRANT – Narrated by ARTHUR FLAVELL

If you enjoy such surreal eyes as Harry Angel, Harry D’Amour and “Repairman Jack”, you might also be interested in checking out Charles L. Grant’s Black Oak series, which centers around Black Oak Security, “a crack team of private investigators led by brilliant, enigmatic ETHAN PROCTOR.” Black Oak handles many of the typical P.I. gigs: office fraud, business scams, background checks, missing persons, and a variety of white collar crime. But they also frequently trip the dark fantastic, thanks to Proctor’s abiding interest in, as one Amazon pundit puts it, “creatures and forces greater than natural.”
